The Philosophy Ph.D. Program offers doctoral level education in the Central Eastern European region up to the standards of the best Western institutions in order to train researchers and teachers of philosophy of the university level. The Program makes use of the unique opportunity offered by Central European University (CEU) a university chartered and accredited in the United States but located in East Central Europe. This dual character of CEU creates an ideal institutional background for a Philosophy Program, which attempts to combine historical and analytical approaches to philosophy.

The Philosophy Ph.D. Program at CEU provides those who have already completed their studies at the B.A. level and have demonstrated a capacity and interest in doing research at a more advanced level with the opportunity to continue their course of study towards a Ph. D. degree. The courses of study at CEU in general and in the Philosophy Program in particular are structured so that it will satisfy the academic needs of students from Central and Eastern European countries as well as of those who do not come from this region.

The curriculum of the Philosophy Ph.D. Program guarantees that students can attain graduation only by getting serious education in each of the major fields of contemporary philosophy. The Ph. D. Program requires students to do serious course work in the first year of their studies; but already at this level allows for some specialization. Students can choose from three areas of specialization:

· Moral and Political Philosophy

· Metaphysics, Epistemology and Philosophy of Mind

· History of Philosophy

We expect that the Philosophy Program will fulfill an important role in the field of Philosophy in bringing Western academic skills and standards to the region and in training a new generation of scholars who will be able to proliferate these skills and standards in the academic institutions of Eastern and East Central Europe. However, the program is also open to students from the rest of the world who wish to study at an institution of higher education located in East Central Europe in a singularly multicultural environment.

3, Joseph Attila University of Szeged: Department of Philosophy

http://primus.arts.u-szeged.hu/philo/DynA/index_a.htm

The Department of Philosophy at the University was founded in 1921. The Department used to be headed by professors who removed from the University of Cluj (Kolozsvár), Transylvania, the most renowned of them being György BARTÓK, who won international reputation. The main areas of research at the time included axiology and Kantian philosophy. Since the seventies research and teaching have focussed on the history of philosophy, which has continued to be the main area of interest up to the present. Modern Continental philosophy stands in the foreground of research and teaching, but Ancient Greek philosophy as well as the Middle Ages and Renaissance thought are also taught in detail. As far as the theoretical branches of study are concerned, mention must be made of ontology, epistemology, logic, moral philosophy, axiology, aesthetics, hermeneutics, philosophy of science and language and applied philosophy as the main areas of research and teaching. Political philosophy as a four-term specialization can currently be taken up both by philosophy and non-philosophy students and ethics as a specialized subject is also to be introduced in the near future. At present, the Department employs fourteen full-time and four part-time lecturers. Professor Ágnes HELLER has been on our staff since 1994. The elaboration of our PhD program, to be introduced in 2001, stands under her auspices.

Research and Other Professional Activities

The major field of research at the Department is Modern philosophy, including 17th century French philosophy, Classical German philosophy, the history of Existentialist philosophy in the 19th and 20th centuries, Hermeneutics and Phenomenology, 20th century French philosophy, the philosophy of language and history and moral and political philosophy in the 20th century. The Department has published several volumes of essays, translations and monographs on the works of Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Dilthey, Simmel, Rickert, Spengler, Nietzsche, Ortega, Unamuno, Marcel and Sartre in the series "Ész – Élet – Egzisztencia" ("Reason – Life – Existence"). Several volumes of study materials have also been published on the philosophy of science.

The Department has organized or has participated in the organization of several international conferences in the past few years. Conference papers have been published in English, German or French in the following volumes:

– Four Hundred Years of Cartesianism (ed. by Dezső Csejtei, András Dékány and Sándor Laczkó) (Pro Philosophia Szegediensi Foundation: Szeged 1996).

– Európai integráció, európai filozófia (European Integration, European Philosophy) (ed. by Dezső Csejtei, András Dékány, Sándor Laczkó, Ferenc Simon) (Pro Philosophia Szegediensi Foundation: Szeged 1998).

– El 98 a la luz de la literatura y la philosophía (ed. by Dezső Csejtei and László Scholz) (Pro Philosophia Szegediensi Foundation: Szeged 1999).

Regular studies

Philosophical studies cover broadly understood interest in humanities; they also provide an opportunity of specialization in philosophical problems of strict sciences. Since the very beginning students are expected to make their own selection of subject to study on the basis of the catalogue of courses provided by the Institute. Both the selection and sequence of the courses depends upon the student's individual decision. The system of prerequisites indicated in the Catalogue of courses is expected to ensure that the canon of theoretical problems is selected in the proper sequence.

During the studies students are expected to study at least 25 (out of 40) strictly philosophical subjects from the following groups: ancinet and medieval philosophy, modern philosophy, logic, ontology, epistemology and philosophy of science, ethics, aesthetics, and social philosophy. Lectures and seminars concerning particular philosophical problems promote the development of specialized interests. Students acquire definite professional skills like: work on the text, translation of philosophical texts from foreign languages, preparation of dissertations, participation in philosophical debates, etc.

Students are also obliged to study subjects complementary to the canon of philosophical education, either in the Institute of Philosophy or in other institutes or universities. Students are expected to attend two foreign language courses (English is obligatory, the other language can be selected by the student).

Students can acquire pedagogic competence attending additional courses at the Pedagogic College.

ADMISSION

for graduates of secondary schools:

Test: regarding general knowledge in the limits of secondary school programme. It includes a test of reasoning abilities and efficiency in learning. Qualification on the basis of score system.

for students and graduates of other subjects:

Faculty of Philosophy and History is the successor of the Faculty of Humanities founded in 1945. Renamed Faculty of History and Social Sciences in 1951, it acquired its present name a year later. The Faculty’s early growth was arrested by the communist regime’s clamp down on academic freedom in 1950s. Of the present departments only History and Ethnology (originally Ethnography) were functioning without interruption. Recruitment in Archaeology was stopped until 1956, in Philosophy, until 1967. In 1961 departments of Sociology left the Faculty to form the Faculty of Economics and Sociology. In 1991 departments of pedagogy and psychology seceded to form the Faculty of Educational Sciences. Department of History of Arts, closed down in 1952, was reactivated in 1992. At present the Faculty conducts research and teaching in five disciplines: archaeology, ethnology, history, history of art and philosophy. It employs 157 academic teachers. The overall number of students in all forms of study exceeds 2200. In the field of archaeology the studies concern ancient and medieval settlement in Eastern Pomerania, defence and residential buildings in Poland, medieval urban complexes, the Stone and Bronze Ages, archaeology of World War II, classical culture in the period of Roman Empire. Research subjects in the field of ethnology cover socio-cultural changes in 20th c. rural communities, theoretical and methodological issues of ethnological studies, study of folklore. In the field of philosophy studies encompass the history of European and Polish philosophy, philosophy of science, aesthetics, ethics, formal logic, and the theory of art. In the domain of history research is focused mainly on the social and economic history of Poland from 10th to 20th c., the history of Byzantium, the history of international relations from 17th to 20th c., history of the military in the Middle Ages and in 20th c., history of cities and industry, history of historiography. ABOUT US

Warsaw University Institute of Sociology is one of the leading academic centres of sociology in Poland. It's history dates back to 1947 when the first students were enrolled. The Institute owes its position to the number of doctors and professors and their scientific attainment, the quality of the courses provided, the motivated and active student body, as well as the successful careers of the graduates. As a recognition of the fine quality of our educational activities, the Institute received the Accreditation of the Conference of Presidents of Polish Academic Schools.

Master degbvree studies at the Institute last five years. During the first two years students are required to complete a basic course consisting of sociological and auxiliary subjects. Sociological subjects are: Introduction to Sociology, Classical and Modern Sociological Theories, Cultural Anthropology, Civilization Processes, Social Psychology, Sociology of Social Structures, Methodology of Social Research, and Statistics. Auxiliary subjects are: Logic, Philosophy, Economy, Computer Course and English. Students are also required to complete a research seminar and a translation course.

On the third year students compose their own plan of studies choosing from a wide range of seminars, lectures, and classes, the faculty subjects they consider most interesting and suitable for their future careers. All subjects are graded using the ECTS point system. There are four "didactic paths" offered to our students. Students can specialize in Sociology of Public Affairs, Working Relations and Human Resources in Organization, Formal Models of Sociology, Sociology of Knowledge and History of Thought.

Students may complete a part of their degree programmes at other faculties. They can also study at other Polish higher education institutions under the MOST programme, and at many European universities under ERASMUS-SOCRATES exchange agreements. For students with difficult financial situation a bursary is provided; there are also scholarships for the best students.

During the final years students write their Master dissertations. In 2001 and 2002 each, 107 students were conferred a Master degree in sociology.

The Institute's computer room and the library with its rich book collection are available to all our students.

Students of sociology create a vibrant social and learning environment. Institutions such as Students' Union, Scientific Group "Far East", Sociological Analysis Workshop, Discussion Film Club and Professional Agency for the Promotion of Students of Sociology make student life at our Institute both exciting and well organized.

Sociology graduates run their careers in the centres for public opinion and market research, in the media and advertising agencies, in public administration services, in non-governmental organizations and everywhere where sociological imagination and ability to analyze social phenomena is needed. Some of them decide to continue their education and research at doctoral studies, which can also be done at our Institute

Graduate study

Graduate studies include Master's Degree and Ph.D. Studies, both covered with European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which allows for participants to combine their postgraduate studies in Ljubljana with their study on other universities, or to complete all of their postgraduate studies in Ljubljana. The exchange programs (Socrates-Erasmus, CEEPUS, university exchanges) also enables professors and students from other universities to participate in the graduate program.

Master's Degree is organized as a two-years course (120 ECTS). Course includes three subjects each year - six altogether, with one per year common to all postgraduate students, and two per year programmed according to the final thesis of the student. General Subjects include all disciplines and branches of philosophy. The Master’s Degree course also allows interdisciplinary program where students combine courses on different Faculties. For detailed information do not hesitate to contact Secretariat of the Department of Philosophy. Master's studies conclude with the public defense of the thesis.

Ph.D. studies are organized on individual basis according to the project and title of the thesis. Our professors are fluent in English, German, and French, so there should be no problems in communication, while for lectures and other regular postgraduate activities knowledge of Slovenian language is necessary.

The most visible specialty of our Department is the presence of different schools and streams of thought. You will find here those who profess critical theory as well as psychoanalytic theory, those who follow phenomenology and cognitive science, or those who work in feminist studies and those who develop philosophy of culture.

You will find some general information about postgraduate studies in Ljubljana on the home page of the University of Ljubljana.

PHILOSOPHY

The graduates` activity of this department is aimed at forming the fundamentals of the students` world-outlook; at logical, methodological and philosophical analysis of nature and society development as well as the social institutions and different spheres of the latter; at servicing government organs, public organizations, companies to provide the scientific approach in their activities. The most important feature of the philosophy department is the intense training of its students in political economy and natural science.

In 60-90-s the scientific work of the philosophy department, headed by a prominent scholar, Honoured Scientist of Russian Federation, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor V.V. Orlov, was aimed at solving the fundamental problems of scientific philosophy: matter, evolution, human-being, essence and sense of human life. At present the research in the new forms of materialism and dialectics are under way. Besides, the new approaches in research such as the problems of social philosophy and political economy, working out the modern economic model of Russian development have arisen. Professor V.V. Orlov has trained 15 Kandidats and 10 Doctors of Philosophy, three of them work at the philosophy department of Perm State University. At the department there is a council " Philosophical Materialism and Acute Problems of the Present Time" and the post-doctorate studies.

SOCIOLOGY

Labour market of the region experiences a lack of highly-qualified specialists in the field of social sciences. The Ural region is extremely short of the professionals having a command of social technologies in personnel management, in market research, in the field of social communications as well as of the specialists in mathematical modelling of social processes. It is necessary to solve the problem of training the teachers of social and political sciences. Sociologist`s activity relates to the research of phenomena , factors and problems happening in social processes` optimization, their regulation and management.

The department of sociology and politology used to be headed for a long time by Doctor of History, Professor A.N. Fadeev; nowadays the head of it is Doctor of Sociology, Professor A.G. Antipjev.

Since 1965 the teachers of the department have been carrying out the research on sociology of labour and work force, social problems of young people. It is planning to set up the post-graduation courses.

Philosophy may be taken as either a major (60 credits), extended major (90 credits), or minor subject (30 credits) for the B.A. degree, which is equivalent to the North American B.A., although differently composed. The undergraduate programs are designed to provide basic grounding in the history of Western philosophy and in the principal philosophical fields (ethics, epistemology, logic, metaphysics, political philosophy). Various issues in contemporary philosophy are also studied. Both the Continental and the Anglo-American philosophical traditions are represented.

The language of instruction is Icelandic. However, a number of courses are offered in English in order to accommodate visiting foreign students. While it is possible for visiting students to take the Department's English-language philosophy courses for degree credit at their home universities (as is regularly done by exchange students under the ERASMUS and NORDPLUS schemes) it is not possible to study for the B.A. degree in English only, since most of the required B.A. courses are given exclusively in Icelandic.

The Department also offers an M.A. program, run in conjunction with specific foreign partner universities. Admission to this program is very limited. The degree offered is a two-year, taught M.A., equivalent to the North American M.A. The first year consists of course work at the M.A.-level; the student studies abroad at a partner university for at least one semester of the first year. The second year is devoted to the writing of an M.A.-thesis under the supervision of one of the members of the permanent teaching staff. There are a number of additional requirements, including work as a teaching assistant. Completion of the degree on an accelerated schedule, in one calendar year, is possible, although not encouraged. Visiting postgraduate students may, given prior agreement with the Department of Philosophy and the student's home institution, take the Department's English-language philosophy courses for degree credit at their home universities, as these courses are seminars taught at the B.A./M.A. level. It is also possible in principle to study for the M.A. degree in English only.

Philosophy is represented at the University of Helsinki by the Department of Philosophy and the Department of Social and Moral Philosophy. The former belongs to the Faculty of Humanities and the latter to the Faculty of Social Science. Both departments are located at Siltavuorenpenger 20 A.

Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities is divided into Theoretical Philosophy and Swedish-language Philosophy. The main fields of Theoretical Philosophy are logic, epistemology and the philosophy of science, systematic philosophy, history of philosophy, and contemporary philosophy. Swedish-language philosophy offers the possibility to study in one's mother tongue for the Swedish-speaking minority of Finland, and includes studies in both theoretical and practical philosophy.

The department has two full professors and two university lecturers in theoretical philosophy, and one professor and one university lecturer in Swedish-language philosophy. The department also hosts a remarkable number of researchers and docents. In an evaluation of the quality of research, the two philosophy departments were awarded the highest possible rating.

The Department of Philosophy admits approximately 35 new majors students each year. Students are by default enrolled into the Master's program (160 credits), but they can also choose to take the B.A. degree (120 credits). Post-graduate studies lead to the degrees of Phil.Lic. and Ph.D.

C)Faculty of Social Science: Department of Social and Moral Philosophy

http://www.helsinki.fi/filosofia/esocial.htm

The Department of Social and Moral Philosophy addresses both normative questions and the conceptual and methodological problems connected with them. Its work thus includes the wide area of the philosophy of the social sciences. A central concern of the Department is ethics, including not only the study of general moral standards and basic human values, but also applied ethics, particularly business ethics, biomedical ethics, environmental ethics, and professional ethics, which encompasses the moral standards appropriate in journalism, law, medicine, scientific research, and other professional fields. Connected with these subfields of ethics are social and political philosophy as well as philosophy of law, which address such questions as the proper ethical standards for institutions - private as well as governmental - and the foundations and constitutive principles of democracy. On the conceptual side of practical philosophy is the theory of action, which explores the nature of human action and the modes of explanation appropriate

to it. This subfield is directly connected with the social sciences, which address the empirical side of the concepts whose structure and logic is addressed by the philosophy of action. The nature of group action and socially shared intentions, particularly the kind essential for cooperation, is a related concern of the philosophy of social science.

The Department of Social and Moral Philosophy also houses the interdisciplinary programme of Science and Technology Studies. Feminist contributions to ethics, as well as feminist treatments of philosophy of science and political philosophy, have also come into the Department's research.

In Gothenburg, as well as at the other Swedish universities, philosophy is divided into Theoretical and Practical philosophy. Theoretical philosophy deals with how the world is, and with how we come to know what it is like. Practical philosophy deals with how the world ought to be; ethical and moral arguments belong to practical philosophy. In Gothenburg you can also study logic, a philosophical discipline which is close to mathematics.

Studying philosophy gives a basic training in critical thinking and is therefore a good introduction (or complement) to almost any other kind of study. Since philosophy is such an important part of the history of thought, no humanistic education ought to be considered quite complete if it does not include philosophy.
